Maintenance Worker II - Electric Plant

The City of Painesville seeks applicants for a Maintenance Worker II - Electric Plant. The position performs routine duties of a laboring nature in the handling of coal and ashes at the Electric Plant; does cleaning and provides manual labor assistance for maintenance work as required.
The work of this class is generally of a routine, repetitive nature, involving responsibility for willing and efficient performance of assigned tasks. An employee in this class is under supervision of an operating engineer, senior engineer, or plant supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
When assigned to work coal:
Unloads coal trucks and rail cars and operates coal handling system to convey coal to boiler bunkers.
Cleans around conveyor belts, pits, coal handling tunnel, transfer tower and penthouse, wherever coal and dust have accumulated during daily operation.
Inspects coal handling system daily for possible problem areas and makes sure that it is properly lubricated for operation.
Shovels up coal which may have spilled from the conveyor system.
Assists in removal of pyrites from boiler room basement.
Records receipts of coal on proper forms.
Informs supervision of coal quality and other conditions relative to coal handling.
Provides laboring assistance as required for maintenance repair purposes when directed to do so.
Makes sure that coalbunkers are kept sufficiently full to support continuing operation of the boiler.
Reports to engineer as duties are completed.
When assigned to work ashes:
Operates ash-handling system to convey bottom and flyash from the boiler area to the ash silo.
Makes sure that the ash pit and precipitator are properly cleaned on each shift.
Informs operating engineer of unusual ash conditions (clinkers, precipitator bridging, etc.) or malfunctions in ash handling system.
Cleans assigned areas of the plant, particularly area around ash pits and pulverizers.
Cleans screens at pond of debris to insure water flow to condensers.
Removes pyrites from pulverizers regularly and assists in transporting them from the boiler room basement for disposal.
Provides laboring assistance for maintenance purposes as required, particularly for repairs to ash handling system.
Makes sure that all valves, gates, etc. are left in proper status for continuing operations.
Reports to engineer as duties are completed.
When assigned to work water:
Operates demineralizer and boiler water treatment systems.
Adds chemicals to water treatment system tanks.
Informs operating engineer of unusual water conditions.
Tests water to determine that proper quality is maintained.
Does general cleaning in areas of water treatment systems.
Reports to engineer as duties are completed.
When assigned to operational maintenance:
Assists where assigned by the Senior Engineer – Operations.
Provides laboring assistance as required for maintenance repair purposes when directed to do so.
Does general cleaning and housekeeping.
Performs operational maintenance as assigned by the Senior Engineer – Operations.
Minimum Requirements:
Education: High school diploma
Experience: Preferably some experience in a mechanical laboring capacity.
A different combination of education and experience may be acceptable if deemed equivalent.
License or Certification Required: Valid Ohio Driver’s License
Physical Demands:
Lift 50 lbs. frequently and 100 lbs. occasionally; ability to carry 50 lbs. frequently; ability to walk up to eight hours on a shift; ability to climb stairs frequently; ability to stoop, bend, twist, squat or kneel frequently; ability to use vibrating or impact tools; ability to wear a respirator. Must be able to work in a dusty environment, in both cold and hot weather, in high humidity, and in areas of possible high noise, 87-decibel, time-weighted average.
Scheduling Demands and Constraints: Must be able to work a 24-hour rotating swing shift.

Skill and Ability to:
Understand the operation of mechanical devices, such as conveyor belt systems, pneumatic ash gates and ash removal systems.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Troubleshoot mechanical problems.
Hear and speak clearly in a loud environment and over a radio.
Must have an 8th grade math proficiency.
