Seasonal Boiler Operator

Hirzel Canning Company seeks applicants for a Seasonal Boiler Operator. This role will assist the Maintenance Manager by performing maintenance and repairs as needed to ensure safe, consistent, and quality operations of all processes and facility equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • GENERAL MAINTENANCE

    • Pipe fitting

    • Metal fabrication skills including MIG, TIG and Stick welding, torch operation, grinding and fitting.

    • Mechanical skills, including bearing and seal replacement

    • Ability to read and interpret manuals and blueprints

    • Troubleshooting skills

    • Responsible for air compressor maintenance

    • Responsible for pump maintenance and rebuilding

    • Provide assistance to Maintenance Manager as directed

    • Responsible for sewer system preventive maintenance and daily monitoring

    • Follow all safety rules, guidelines and General Manufacturing Practices (GMPs)

      • Maintain a safe, clean work area

      • Remain alert and observant of unsafe work areas, unsafe working conditions and/or unsafe employees and report these conditions immediately to the Plant Manager. 

  • BOILERS

    • Responsible for start up and shut down of boilers

    • Responsible to check gauges to ensure boilers are functioning to required standards

    • Perform chemical testing of boilers and cooling towers.

    • Perform maintenance of plant utility systems.

    • Responsible for steam trap maintenance

    • Troubleshoot problems with equipment operation and controls

    • Responsible for routine maintenance of boilers

    • Ensure all safety features are working properly.

    • Check boiler parts for wear and make recommendations and arrangements for major repairs

    • Maintain accurate record keeping of log books and fill out corresponding maintenance program paperwork

    • Maintain a clean boiler room

    • Periodically work with Boiler Inspector to ensure that boilers are working properly and everything is in order. 

    • Recommend any cost saving ideas to Plant Manager

    • Conduct visual inspections of boilers and associated equipment to ensure everything is running properly and safely.

    • Will be responsible for boiler operation off-season

Pay and Shift Hours:

Requirements and Qualifications:

    • Daily requirements:

      • Bending, twisting, turning, reaching below the knee, pushing, pulling, squatting, kneeling, standing for extended periods, walking, sitting, manual dexterity

    • Lifting requirements: 

      • Will regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds

    • High School Diploma or GED

    • 3 – 5 years hands on experience 

    • Knowledge and experience in boiler operations, repairs and chemicals used with boilers

    • Knowledge of tools and ability to use them correctly, safely and efficiently

    • Experience conducting methodical examination of equipment and troubleshooting what needs to be done

    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
